Newton House
800 E Olmos DrIVE
With its beautifully landscaped site, the Newton House is one of the best efforts of Ayres’ firm. While this is a large house, an informality is apparent in the seemingly random placement of fenestration on the outside walls. The entrance tower hints at the design of the Atkinson House, now the McNay Art Museum, which was to follow on the hells of the Newton commission. The sculptural molding that frames the front door is unusual in the firm’s work and adds an element of three-dimensionality to the otherwise flat surfaces of the walls.
